Scientific Travel Guide

Each student will be making a "Scientific Travel Guide" poster and writing about the area they chose to travel to in California.  All projects will then be filmed with each student narrating their "travel guide".  Students will be graded on their written work, oral presentation, and poster project.  Click on the "rubric" tabs below to see how they will be graded.

 Follow the steps below to complete your project.

Getting Started

  1.  Choose "Where you would like to go on vacation in California".  Remember to choose a place that is either in the California desert, California ocean/coastline, or the California mountains/high sierra/forest area.  If you are not sure, check with Mrs. Elam to get it approved.
  2. Gather the information that you need to complete the project.  Use several sources.  You can use information from this website, from what you have learned in class, or from other sources.  Please tell where you got your information from.
  3. Choose at least one animal and one plant, that you would find in the area that you are visiting. 
  4. Find out what the weather is like in the summertime and the wintertime in the area that you chose. 
  5. Think about what type of clothing you should wear when you visit your California area.
Writing - Each area must be answered with at least one topic sentence and one supporting sentence.

  1. Choose at least one animal that you would find in the area that you are visiting.  Write a topic sentence and at least 1 to 2 supporting sentences about the special feature/adaptation that allows your animal to live and survive in that area of California.  Remember your sentences should include the name of the animal you chose and the special feature/adaptation that allows it to live and survive in that area of California.
  2. Choose at least one plant that you would find in the area that you are visiting.  Write a topic ssentence and at least one to two supporting sentences about the special feature/adaptation that allows your plant to live and survive in that area of California. Remember your sentences should include the name of the plant you chose and the special feature/adaptation that allows it to live and survive in that area of California.
  3. Describe what the weather is like in the summertime and the wintertime in the area that you chose.  Write at least one sentence about the weather in the summertime and one sentence about the weather in the wintertime  for the area that you have chosen.
  4. Write at least two sentences about the type of clothing that you should wear or pack to wear when you visit the California area that you chose.
 
Project/Illustration - It should be done on four different pages.  The pages should be 11X14.  This can be achieved by cutting a sheet of poster paper into four quarters.  You may want your child to do their illustration/project on an 8.5X11 piece paper and then glue it to the 11X14 paper.  The paper should be orientated "landscape" style.  You can use a variety of mediums- i.e. paint, collage, marker, crayons
  1. Write and do an "illustration project that shows the area that you chose to travel to on your vacation.
  2. Write and do an "illustration project" that shows the special features/adaptations that allows the plant and animal that you chose to live and survive in the area of California that you want to visit. 
  3. Describe, draw a picture, or make a collage that shows the type of clothing that you should wear when you visit your California area in the summertime and the wintertime.
